SMC eligibility 2026: K, S, L through R2 explained
Special Monthly Compensation (SMC) is the most under-claimed VA disability benefit. Veterans qualify for SMC because of specific situations — anatomical losses, the need for help with daily living, or being confined to home. SMC pays on top of (or in some cases instead of) the schedular rating.
2026 SMC rates (effective Dec 1, 2025)
| Tier | Rate (per month) | For |
|---|---|---|
| SMC-K | $139.87 (stacks) | Loss of a creative organ, hand, foot, eye, ear, breast, or speech function. |
| SMC-S | $4,408.53 | Housebound. |
| SMC-L | $4,900.83 | Aid & attendance of another person needed. |
| SMC-R1 | $9,826.88 | Highest level of aid & attendance. |
| SMC-R2 / T | $11,271.67 | R2 (higher level + TBI residuals); T = TBI need for personal care. |
How SMC-K stacking works
Each qualifying SMC-K condition adds $139.87 to your monthly comp. A veteran rated 100% schedular with bilateral hearing loss qualifying for SMC-K and loss of an eye qualifying for SMC-K would receive $3,938.58 + $139.87 + $139.87 = $4,218.32/mo before dependents. SMC-K can also stack on top of SMC-S, L, or R tiers.
Housebound (SMC-S) — two paths
- Statutory: 100% schedular rating PLUS an additional independent disability rated 60%+.
- Factual: permanently and substantially confined to your home or immediate premises.
SMC-S pays $4,408.53/mo — about $470 more than 100% alone. Calculator flags likely SMC-S eligibility when your inputs match the statutory path.
FAQ
Do SMC-K conditions stack?
Yes. Each qualifying SMC-K condition adds $139.87/mo on top of your regular comp (and on top of higher SMC tiers if applicable). Multiple SMC-K events stack additively.
What is the difference between SMC-S and SMC-L?
SMC-S is for housebound veterans — you either have a 100% rating plus an additional independent 60% disability, OR you are permanently and substantially confined to your home. SMC-L is for those needing the aid and attendance of another person.
Do I have to apply for SMC?
Often yes. VA does award SMC-K automatically for some conditions, but many veterans never get the higher tiers applied unless they specifically claim them. A VSO can help you file VA Form 21-526EZ with an SMC supplement.
